Memories of a long and varied career in local schools in Bishop Auckland, Crook, Wolsingham, West Auckland and Evenwood, retold by his daughter. William Johnson joined St. Anne’s School in Bishop Auckland, aged five, in 1910, and continued as a pupil at the Barrington school, in Crook and Wolsingham, as a pupil-teacher in Crook, then a student, teaching later in West Auckland and finally becoming headmaster at Evenwood School. Small details of school life - dip pens, frozen ink wells, underground air-raid shelters - are remembered with affection.

Book description
This book builds up a picture of what life was like for ordinary people during the Second World War. It looks at rationing, the blackout, enemy raids and many other restrictions. It does so by reliving the wartime memories of thirty people from many walks of life, all centred on Bishop Auckland. The last contribution is the story of a Bishop Auckland pilot who was shot down flying a single-seater Typhoon fighter-bomber over France, and taken prisoner.

Bishop Auckland In The 1850s
Bishop Auckland In The 1850s
Barbara Laurie
  • Published by Barbara Laurie
  • Paperback 1996
  • ISBN: 0 9523461 3 3
Book description
A study of one of the most vital and dynamic decades in the development of the town. The 1850s were chosen as being an interesting era because of the first Ordnance Survey map and the first significant census. It soon became clear that it was a defining decade for many other reasons, and the number of 'firsts' recorded at this fascinating time justify the author's conclusion that 'This was the decade when Bishop Auckland became a town and took control of its own future.'

Barbara Laurie
  • Published by Barbara Laurie
  • Printed by Ceddes Print & Design
  • Paperback 1998
  • ISBN: 0 9523461 4 1
Book description
Subtitled 'The Fabulous 50s', this book takes us on a journey through a decade of unparalleled change based on life in Bishop Auckland in the 1950s. Nearly sixty people share their memories of such diverse subjects as house demolition and television, Hanratty's scrap yard and the hospital, teddy boys and a tremendously successful amateur football team. The book ends: 'The contrasts in this account of the 1950s are enormous. In the same year that Florence Hopper was putting on scarf and gloves to go to the ash closet, carrying a candle, Sputnik was orbiting the earth. So many things that we now take for granted were just beginning to be part of everyday life - cars, television, fridges, telephones, self-service shopping, plastics, pop music. That is when the world changed, in the 50s.'
